First Cold Weather Super Bowl (XLVIII) Will Be Held in NYC

It’s finally going to happen. A Super Bowl in the middle of winter.
Earlier today Roger Goodell announced that in 2014 Super Bowl XLVIII (I actually had to google this to find out it was 48) will be held in the Giants/Jets New Meadowlands Stadium.
The selection came down to Tampa and New York, with New York ultimately winning the majority vote. Each team presented a video clip to give their argument of why each venue would be an excellent site for the Super Bowl. I am going to say Tampa lost because they decided to have Dick Vitale do a voice-over which shouted, “Vote for Tampa, Bay-bee!.” I am annoyed just typing that statement, I could only imagine how fast the voters were turned off by Tampa after actually hearing it.
Personally, I would have loved to see it in Green Bay, but when a team spends 1.6 billion dollars on a stadium I guess it is worth giving them a little attention – even if is four years down the road and someone will have built a big and better venue by then.
It will be interesting to see how fans react to the weather.
While many plan vacations around the Super Bowl because it is always in a warm weather climate, many will now buy their ticket, go to the game, and get the hell out of NYC and back to their sunny beaches as fast as possible. Of course if two cold weather teams are in the big game it will not be a big deal. The tickets will still sell at outrageous prices and the hot chocolate vendors will make a killing. I think it would be a great night for a Snuggie give-a-way night.
I wonder how this venue selection will settle with warm weather teams? Players that are used to playing and practicing in 70-80 degree weather will be playing the biggest game of their lives in the low 20’s with the possibility of snow. We could only be so lucky to see another “Tuck Rule Game“, only this time it’s the Super Bowl and without the Oakland Raiders.
